“Two Men at a Table” represents a reworking of Erich Heckel’s 1912 print “Opponents.” In this version, the two men bear the features of Heckel and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Made at the time that the Brücke group was disbanding, there was an increasing sense of tension among these former friends, exacerbated by Kirchner’s 1913 Brücke Chronicle, in which he downplayed Heckel’s contributions. Subjects related to alienation, melancholy, and solitude became more prominent after Heckel settled in Berlin.
