Waterfall Arts
 256 High Street,
Belfast, ME 04915
--------------------------
Waterfall Arts invites creatives from all over the world to participate in our open call for mail art, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”.
Mail art is simply art that has been sent through the mail, but generally is made knowing the piece will journey via the post. Painting, drawing, collage, photography, and writing can all easily be mail art. Stamps, how the piece is addressed, and the marks made by the postal service also add to the final art that arrives at its destination.
As a medium, sending art through the post office allows for a new type of physical connection between people, places, and ideas. During the fall and winter of 2023-24, Waterfall Arts will undergo Phase 4 of our construction project and there will be no public access to the Clifford Gallery, but that doesn’t mean we can’t show art! In fact, it feels like the perfect time to create an exhibition of mail art from around the world to be exhibited in our Corridor Gallery. The collection will be on view beginning with the first piece received and will grow as the entries arrive, providing a space for a living breathing connection between any visitor who steps through our doors and the artworks we receive. We’ll host an opening reception on October 20, 2023.
Our goal is to create a community show where everyone can participate, regardless of their art experience. All ages, creative abilities and cultural experiences are not just welcome but celebrated!
Directions for Participation:
Please apply postage directly to artwork and send to
Waterfall Arts at 256 High Street,
Belfast, ME 04915
deadline October 15, 2023.
We will begin hanging mail art as it arrives on a rolling basis and the exhibition will grow! Please do not include a return address if you don’t want your mailing address publicly displayed. All artworks should be original, no photocopies. No racism or violence. Any artwork that undermines the safe and inclusive nature of our community and this exhibit will not be included. No size or medium limitations. *Please note: All works received will become part of the Mail Art collection of Waterfall Arts and will not be returned to the artists.

Hello Mail Artist!

Thank you for your submission to our upcoming Mail Art Exhibition & Fundraiser!  I am passing along an invitation to our upcoming exhibition opening on Saturday, September 9, that includes an exhibition preview to invited guests (i.e. artists) only.

The artist preview is from 1:00 – 2:00pm, then from 2-3pm is a curator/artist tour with the artist in the main part of the gallery, Sonja Ahlers.  Then the reception follows.  Please RSVP if you are in town and able to attend (see attached invite below). The preview is a good time to visit, as we have a lot less people than would be attending the artist tour and reception after 2pm.  Also – artists get a free drink on us only during the preview!

A few things just for you as a participant of the Mail Art Exhibition, one of the over 250 artists in this show!

-          If you are receiving this email, this means I have received your artwork and it is in the exhibition.

-          Yes – you will receive a Letter of Participation via an emailed pdf.  I will get to those in upcoming weeks, so please be patient with that for now.

-          I am hanging the physical exhibition this coming week, so may not be able to respond to your emails right now. I promise to get back to any of your questions as soon as I can.

-          The exhibition is going to take us a while to get online.  I just finished photographing everything tonight, and once our exhibition is physically up in the gallery next week, then we will start to work on the online exhibit. I will keep you updated on that!

-          If you sent in more than the requested ONE artwork, I am only able to accommodate one artwork per artist in the gallery. So the rest of your artwork has been photographed as one  “lot” in the auction, rather than as individual works. Those extra works will go online as part of the auction, which will be a separate website.

-          If your artworks had your mailing address or any other personal information you do not want to share with the purchaser of your artwork – please let me know and I will cover it up before the auction. For now, all the works will have a label with your FIRST NAME, LAST NAME, CITY and COUNTRY.  Your personal info will not be published anywhere, but only exists on the back of the artwork IF you included it. Only myself and the purchaser of your artwork will see that.

-          If you know of someone who has mailed me art and did not get an email from me, it probably means I couldn’t properly read their email or they did not include an email in their package. Please pass along my email to them if they want any of this info, links to the online exhibition, and a letter of participation.

-          Note the auction is happening both on site at the gallery, and online on Saturday, November 18, 2023.  Works that don’t sell that day, will stay online for auction for another 30 days. More details will be coming in the next few months. But please, encourage your friends and family to come check out the work to start thinking of bids. Bidding starts at $10.  And there is a LOT of collectible art in this amazing show.

Thank you so much for participating and donating an artwork for our programs at the gallery.

I really appreciate it, as I would like to keep our programs free and accessible to as many people as possible – not easy with fewer grants and sponsorships out there.  Every penny raised will go to purchase art materials for our visitors to use, to pay for guest artists to lead our fun talks and workshops, and to promote our events so that more people know about what we do and get to engage with contemporary art.

The Mail Art we  have received is amazing, and I really do thank you.

Please tag us if you see us posting on our social channels to let folks know you are in our new amazing exhibition! #RichmondArtGalleryBC

Thank you, and will be in touch soon.  For now – a few days off to rest. J

All the best,

Kathy

For thirty years, Victoria-based artist Sonja Ahlers has been making books in her distinct visual idiom that is equal parts collage and poetry. Classification Crisis, a major survey of her career, emerged from Ahlers’s project of the last half-decade to prepare her archive. The exhibition includes her Riot Grrrl zines of the nineties, one-of-a-kind chapbooks spanning thirty years, a decade of unseen work after she “quit art” in the wake of the Vancouver art boom, and other artworks and ephemera from a career of collecting images and scraps of language.

Revisiting her career also led Ahlers to produce a new bookwork, Rabbit-Hole, which she describes as a “feminist memoir/scrapbook/confessional commentary on the art world and my place within it.” Adapted for the exhibition as an installation, Rabbit-Hole re-tells the story of her career as a mystery narrative. From the hindsight of the #MeToo reckoning, Ahlers thematizes the collecting and reassembling that sustains her art as a search for clues left behind by her former selves.

Best known for her books Temper, Temper (1998)—a compilation of her nineties zines—The Selves (2010)—the precursor to her influential work with Rookie Mag—and the handmade angora Fierce Bunnies she has been making for three decades, Ahlers’s work has been a touchstone for multiple generations of feminist culture. The exhibition is accompanied by a lavishly illustrated publication that includes essays by contemporaries of Ahlers from throughout her career, and Rabbit-Hole. Curated by Godfre Leung.

Join us for the opening reception! Everyone welcome.

Collecting & Reassembling: International Mail Art Exhibition & Fundrasier

September 9 - November 5, 2023

Location: Richmond Art Gallery

Exhibition Coordinator: Kathy Tycholis

Artists from all over the world have contributed postcard-size artworks for the 2023 Mail Art Exhibition and Fundraiser. Organized in tandem with the Classification Crisis, this open-call exhibition invited artists to mail in one original piece of artwork in response to the theme of “collecting and reassembling.”

Also known as postal art and correspondence art, mail art is an artistic movement centered on sending and sharing small-scale works through the postal service. Based on the principles of equal, one-to-one collaboration between artists, mail art has become a worldwide cultural movement for artists to share visual art, poetry, or any other artistic form through the postal system. Generally seen as an art movement that emphasizes artistic experimentation combined with humour, spontaneity, and simplicity of materials, it is an art form that is intended to bypass the usual gallery system. For many Mail Artists, the process of exchanging ideas and collaboration within a global community is valued above the aesthetic merits of the finished product, differentiating the Mail Art Network from the world of commercial postcards and of simply “mailed art”.

Through the 2000s, Richmond Art Gallery hosted regular mail art and artist trading card exhibitions that over time included thousands of artists from all over the world. Given Sonja Ahlers’ engagement with mail art and mixed tape exchanges throughout her career, it seemed fitting to revive the Mail Art Exhibition at the Richmond Art Gallery, ten years after the last one in 2013.

To continue the democratic tradition of this art form, all mailed-in entries the gallery received are featured in this exhibition. Once the exhibition in the Gallery closes, these artworks will be auctioned off to raise funds in support of our public programs.

The Return of Art School

August 28 – September 25, 2023

Location: Richmond Cultural Centre Upper Rotunda Gallery

Step into the vibrant world of creativity as teachers and staff from the Richmond School District take center stage in this group exhibition. Representing a kaleidoscope of styles, mediums, and perspectives, this collective showcase is a testament to the diverse and eclectic nature of their respective artistic visions. Beyond their role in shaping the creative minds of students–and a future generation of artists–they too, continue to learn and grow on their life-long artistic journeys.

Here, skilled educators and support staff unleash their artistic imagination, while breaking down the boundaries between teaching and art-making. It is their hope that the transformative power of art and education that they experience first-hand, equally inspires and speaks to visitors to the Upper Rotunda Gallery.
